Emergency Preparedness Solution to Violence in Schools

As Arizona Sherriff Joe Arpaio and action movie veteran, Stephen Segal trained volunteers to defend Phoenix-area schools against gunmen, one thing was made clear. The threat of brutality against America’s children is an epidemic that demands immediate action. ActiveForever has answered the call with an affordable emergency survival kit.

The Classroom Emergency Lockdown Kit from ActiveForever is a must-have safety precaution for schools across the country. As a twenty-year leading advocate of health and safety, ActiveForever believes this survival kit should be standard equipment in each and every classroom. Therefore it is providing them at a more affordable price than its competitors. Read the press release.

“No matter what side you are on in regard to gun control and guns in schools, ActiveForever has a solution everyone should profoundly value; for the safety of our children, as well as the staff. These supplies can also help save lives for a variety of common emergencies that arise in schools of every type.” –ActiveForever CEO, Erika Feinberg

There are many different viewpoints coloring the controversial issue, however one commonality is the desire to keep children safe. While there may not be enough resources to equip every school with armed guards and firearms, ActiveForever believes the Classroom Lockdown Kit is a safe, sensible step in the right direction.

Weather Forecasts Call for Heavy Snow as “Q” Storms In

snowfall

February 20, 2013, Scottsdale, Ariz. snowfall from the vantage point of the ActiveForever balcony!

Judging by the snowfall in Scottsdale yesterday it’s safe to say winter isn’t over just yet. Weather forecasts predict some pretty significant storms across the country.

The following excerpts from “Huff Post Green:”

A powerful winter storm system moving through the central United States could bring up to a foot of snow to areas of the Plains and reach as far east as the Ohio Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Channel has named the system winter storm “Q,” apparently after the New York City subway line, according to The New York Times. But as whimsical as the name might be, authorities aren’t taking winter storm Q lightly.

The STABILicers Heavy Duty Ice Cleats are a 5 star consumer rated product and they ship FREE.$44.95

Winter storm warnings were issued from Colorado to Illinois Wednesday as the system dumped snow in the Rockies and moved eastward. According to the Associated Press, hundreds of snow plows and salt spreaders were prepped in St. Louis Wednesday, well in advance of the storm…

AccuWeather forecasted snowfall totaling up to 24 inches for areas of the Plains, with snow and ice spanning a large part of the central U.S.

Are you prepared?

Lady Gaga Could Benefit from some Far Infrared

Lady Gaga has cancelled her entire U.S. tour due to pains from Synovitis.

Medical tests revealed Gaga has a labral tear of the right hip. A hip labral tear involves the ring of soft elastic tissue, called the labrum, that follows the outside rim of the socket of the hip joint.

Often compared to lupus, Synovitis, also known as “Toxic Synovitis” is an inflammation within the hip joint. A diagnosis is obtained following an ultrasound or joint x-rays of the hip or blood tests.

What is going on in the body?

Synovitis is a non-traumatic hip pain, which means that it is not caused by an injury. Instead, pain is caused by swelling and inflammation in the hip. Synovitis often follows an upper respiratory infection such as a cold or flu.

What are the signs and symptoms of the disease?

  • pain in one hip
  • a limp or inability to bear weight because of the hip pain
  • low grade fever at the beginning of the illness
  • knee and thigh pain on the affected side
  • often the infected person does not appear to be ill

What are the causes and risks of the disease?

While Synovitis often follows an upper respiratory infection, the exact cause is not clear, so there is no known prevention.

According to The Detroit News (and others) Lady Gaga released the following statement when announcing the initial cancellations: “I am completely devastated and heartsick. I’ve been hiding this injury and pain from my staff for a month, praying it would heal, but after last night’s performance I could not walk.”

Far Infrared therapy has been known to be especially effective in relieving pain from inflammation or irritation such as that caused by conditions like Synovitis or lupus.

What is Far Infrared Heat?

Far Infrared is a band of light that we perceive as heat. While we cannot see infrared heat, we can feel its effects. Infrared radiation, or radiant heat, represents over half of the energy emitted by the Sun and is divided into three segments: near, middle, and far.

Infrared rays heat our body by a process called conversion. Through conversion, far infrared heat can penetrate organic substances such as the human body without heating the air in between. By using far infrared heat as opposed to traditional heating methods, you enable the heat to penetrate deeper into your body without the skin discomfort of heating pads, hot towels, and some pain relief gels/creams.

Congenital Heart Defect survivors and their stories

February 7-14th is Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week. Congenital Heart Defect, also known as Congenital Heart Disease, (CHD) is any birth defect which affects the heart or the large blood vessels. Congenital means that the defect is present at birth.

Congenital Heart Defect is considered to be the most common birth defect, and is a leading cause of birth-defect related deaths worldwide. Congenital Heart Disease affects approximately 1.8 millions families in the United States according to the Congenital Heart Information Network (C.H.I.N.)

The inspirational and heart-warming Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week Pinterest page is something you don’t want to miss. Here are some of the CHD survivors on that page and their stories:

Kaden (above) was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries the day he was born. He had open heart surgery at 12 days old. Complications during and after the 11-hour surgery led the surgeon to believe his heart wouldn’t sustain life. He went home two weeks later. He has pulmonary stenosis and a small VSD but is doing amazingly well.

Olivia (left) was born with half a heart as a result of a severe and complicated congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). During the past four years she has endured three open-heart surgeries, five heart catheters and a stroke.

Norah (right) was born with Heterodoxy, an ASD, VSD, interrupted IVC w/ Azygos continuation, an Intestinal Malrotation, minor Hydronephrosis, Pulmonary Stenosis and Polysplenia (she has 2 functional spleens). She had Ladd’s Procedure when she was 5 weeks old and open heart surgery at 9 months.

Mother says:
“We were fortunate enough to know she’d have a CHD before birth. It was tough to go through the pregnancy not knowing what would be wrong with her (bad news started when I was about 12 weeks along), but always loving her. She was, and IS, perfect. It took a long time to remember that she was perfect (at least to me) before I knew about her conditions and that they didn’t change anything. She was still the baby I loved, she’d just have a more colorful story than some.”

February’s Charity Checkout: Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center!

Hi all! It’s February 1st and we all know what that means, right?

That’s right! It’s time to move on to February’s Charity Check-out recipient. ActiveForever is so excited to partner up with the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center in an effort to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other movement disorders.

So be sure to make a purchase and give what you can upon check-out. It’s for a wonderful cause that affects as many as one million American men and women today. Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year, and this number does not reflect the thousands of cases that go undetected.

The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center (MAPC) and Movement Disorders Clinic is a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence, and a wonderful resource for people with Parkinson’s and their families. The Center was established in 1997 by Muhammad Ali, Jimmy Walker, a Phoenix philanthropist, and Dr. Abraham Lieberman.

National Wear Red Day!

It’s National Wear Red Day! Not because it’s such a beautiful color, but rather because it’s a way to show support for the women who are taking action to protect their hearts and by extension, their lives!

They do this by reducing high blood pressure and cholesterol. They maintain a healthy weight by getting regular exercise and they do not smoke. All of these actions taken together go a long way toward decreasing the risk of developing heart disease.

Are you at risk of developing heart disease? The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute helps you find out.

Together we are powerful. Let's unite and get to the heart of good health.

Women, are you *still* smoking?

The answer is “Yes” according to new research published today by the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study reports that these days women who smoke are at a much greater risk of dying from lung cancer than their predecessors. This is due to a growing parity in smoking habits among men and women over the years. Apparently today’s woman has come a long way baby as far as smoking younger and more often.

In fact, women have basically achieved equal opportunity when it comes to dying from smoke related diseases such as emphysema. If they continue on this tar and nicotine filled trajectory, they will surpass men… in a very unsavory way.

I don’t know about you, but I really don’t think this is the right way to go about achieving greater equality.

Smoke like a man, die like a man: Study says women have caught up to men on lung cancer risk – The Washington Post.

Time to QUIT. But don’t do it alone! Here’s how:

Resolution and Weight/Weight Loss Shockers

aflogo-96x96Perhaps prompted by all the hyper-idealistic discussion about resolutions (which always inevitably revolve around diet and weight loss,) the Los Angeles Times recently reported that a few extra pounds is fine for your health.

I don’t know about you, but this news prompts in me a rare reaction of simultaneous shock and comfort. It evokes the former because it flies in the face of virtually everything else I’ve heard regarding weight and health for ohhh… my lifetime; a.k.a., more than the past thirty years.

It’s comforting because I am—like many of you I’m sure (hey, we’re Americans)—a few pounds overweight. I’m working on it though. My meticulously planned resolutions are on track now for three days and counting.

Regardless, the story is worth a gander. Plus the page features a Dr. Oz “Real Age” calculator. It’s smack dab in the middle of the story in the form of a Google Ad, but as far as ads go, you have to admit, it’s a good one. If you’ve never calculated your real age, it’s worth a go. It can be a real eye opening experience; and depending on your lifestyle, that can be either good or bad. You’ve been warned.

If this short series of bombshells are not enough for you, take heed. Solace comes in the form of another article listed off to the left of the page under “RELATED.” There is a link to a bit of news that ran in late December. It reports that running is actually a more effective way to shed pounds than weight training.

(Huh?) What is going on in this bizarro world of ours?

Personally, I’m happy about this one too. I like lifting weights, but through the years I have found a shortage of things in this world that that offer a greater sense of satisfaction and well-being than a good, hard, sweat-inducing, mind-wandering, run.

Not only does it promote a leaner body and a stronger heart, but it just as equally results in clarity of mind and an overall sense of calm.

Ahhh… 2013 is going to be a great year. I can feel it.

Ooohhh…. Jackpot.

ActiveForever’s Patricka and Rocky Complete the Iron Girl 5k!!

aflogo-96x96ActiveForever is very proud of their own Patricka Fletcher and Raquel, (Rocky) Johnson for committing to, and completing, the annual Iron Girl 5K run this past weekend. Rocky’s daughter Kira joined in the fun too.

Go Patricka GO!!

All three women braved brutally early, pre-dawn hours and what felt like Subarctic temperatures to give it their all. This was Patricka’s fifth year participating in the run. It was the third year for both Rocky and Kira.

Although Patricka admits she did not train as often as she would’ve preferred, she remains consistently committed to a healthy diet and regular exercise and was able to finish a thoroughly impressive 24th in her age group!

CONGRATS PATRICKA, ROCKY and KIRA!!

Iron Girl was launched in 2004 as a way to celebrate and promote the idea of healthy living for women. They use their Web site as a resource with training and nutrition tips as well as health-oriented columns. The annual run serves as a platform by which fitness-focused women can display all the progress they’ve made toward a healthier lifestyle.

Participants choose between the 5k run and the 10 mile run.

SUCCESS!!!

Activeforever Now Provides Easy International Shipping

aflogo-96x96ActiveForever is like a caring and protective mother, always on the lookout for your health, safety and well-being. Their fervent dedication to this mission solidifies their place on the cutting edge of all the newest products, developments and solutions for wellness.

For some time now, ActiveForever has had to resist a persistent demand to fully expand their operations to regular international shipping. They feared high incidences of fraud and complications in reconciling with international banks.

As the oldest and most trusted provider of health, fitness and safety products in the United States, ActiveForever offers very high service levels. They feared that would be diminished a bit with their international customers.

All that has changed, and they are thrilled to announce their new partnership with Bongo International. By joining forces with this industry leader in intelligent, eCommerce transactions, ActiveForever is properly equipped to provide their worldwide customers with a seamless, intuitive shopping experience.

“In the past, the international check-out process was convoluted and disparate,” said ActiveForever CEO and Chief Happiness Officer, Erika Feinberg. “The user had to visit a different website, create a separate account and allow a third-party company to place the order on their behalf.”

Now, regardless of whether an ActiveForever order is placed from France or Ohio, the check-out process is completed with little more than the click of a button.

The company has proven their ability to provide quality products worldwide, and are pleased to benefit their global customers with Bongo’s smart, simple, Check-out Solution.

“There is no longer a goofy process,” said Feinberg. “Now location is a non-issue, our customers simply check-out with no middleman and the order is received.”

Feinberg added that so far, the response has been remarkable.

“Our international customers seem thrilled that we’re making our product offering freely available to them with this easy process.”

ActiveForever’s Charity Check-out Success!

aflogo-96x96ActiveForever would like to thank everyone who donated and helped make the inaugural month of our Charity Check-out such a wonderful success.

ActiveForever selected Daughters of the American Revolution, (DAR) as the recipient of their Charity Check-out for the month of November. As part of this effort, shoppers were given the option to add a donation to their purchase total. The proceeds went to benefit DAR’s Project Patriot program.

This project helps fulfill the holiday “wish-lists” of overseas servicemen and women. These lists include everyday items such as Top Ramen, peanut butter, Campbell’s Soup, Slim Jims, “Extra” gum, Pop Tarts, etc., They are purchased directly for the troops with 100 percent of the donations received and shipped in time for the holidays.

On January 4, 2013, ActiveForever will present DAR with a check along with a supply of ActiveForever catalogs. The meeting-luncheon will be held at McCormick Golf Club in Scottsdale.

ActiveForever was so thrilled with the outcome of the Charitable Check-out that they’ve decided to keep it going. The charity for December is Honor House — a transitional home for wounded veterans which helps them heal and reintegrate back into society.

We hope you join us in supporting this worthy cause.

ActiveForever and CMTA

Did you know that Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT) currently affects roughly 115,000 Americans of all ages?

The hereditary, neurological disorder first diagnosed in 1886, is not life-threatening and almost never affects the brain. It does however, cause damage to the peripheral nerves. These nerves connect the brain and spinal cord to the muscles and sensory organs in our bodies. This neuropathy (nerve damage) causes muscles to become weak and deteriorate as well as a loss of sensation in the extremities.

The genetic causes of CMT were unknown as recently as 1991. As of now, scientists and physicians have helped to concretely identify 10 different genes linked to CMT. In all, there are a total of 30 genes in which abnormalities are thought to lead to CMT.

As part of their growing arsenal of partnerships, ActiveForever has joined forces with the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA). Together we advocate for the support, education and pursuit of a cure for those afflicted with CMT.

We invite you to learn more about this cause and find out ways in which you can become involved!
