Weather Forecasts Call for Heavy Snow as “Q” Storms In

snowfall

February 20, 2013, Scottsdale, Ariz. snowfall from the vantage point of the ActiveForever balcony!

Judging by the snowfall in Scottsdale yesterday it’s safe to say winter isn’t over just yet. Weather forecasts predict some pretty significant storms across the country.

The following excerpts from “Huff Post Green:”

A powerful winter storm system moving through the central United States could bring up to a foot of snow to areas of the Plains and reach as far east as the Ohio Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Channel has named the system winter storm “Q,” apparently after the New York City subway line, according to The New York Times. But as whimsical as the name might be, authorities aren’t taking winter storm Q lightly.

Winter storm warnings were issued from Colorado to Illinois Wednesday as the system dumped snow in the Rockies and moved eastward. According to the Associated Press, hundreds of snow plows and salt spreaders were prepped in St. Louis Wednesday, well in advance of the storm…

AccuWeather forecasted snowfall totaling up to 24 inches for areas of the Plains, with snow and ice spanning a large part of the central U.S.

Lady Gaga Could Benefit from some Far Infrared

Lady Gaga has cancelled her entire U.S. tour due to pains from Synovitis.

Medical tests revealed Gaga has a labral tear of the right hip. A hip labral tear involves the ring of soft elastic tissue, called the labrum, that follows the outside rim of the socket of the hip joint.

Often compared to lupus, Synovitis, also known as “Toxic Synovitis” is an inflammation within the hip joint. A diagnosis is obtained following an ultrasound or joint x-rays of the hip or blood tests.

What is going on in the body?

Synovitis is a non-traumatic hip pain, which means that it is not caused by an injury. Instead, pain is caused by swelling and inflammation in the hip. Synovitis often follows an upper respiratory infection such as a cold or flu.

What are the signs and symptoms of the disease?

  • pain in one hip
  • a limp or inability to bear weight because of the hip pain
  • low grade fever at the beginning of the illness
  • knee and thigh pain on the affected side
  • often the infected person does not appear to be ill

What are the causes and risks of the disease?

While Synovitis often follows an upper respiratory infection, the exact cause is not clear, so there is no known prevention.

According to The Detroit News (and others) Lady Gaga released the following statement when announcing the initial cancellations: “I am completely devastated and heartsick. I’ve been hiding this injury and pain from my staff for a month, praying it would heal, but after last night’s performance I could not walk.”

Far Infrared therapy has been known to be especially effective in relieving pain from inflammation or irritation such as that caused by conditions like Synovitis or lupus.

What is Far Infrared Heat?

Far Infrared is a band of light that we perceive as heat. While we cannot see infrared heat, we can feel its effects. Infrared radiation, or radiant heat, represents over half of the energy emitted by the Sun and is divided into three segments: near, middle, and far.

Infrared rays heat our body by a process called conversion. Through conversion, far infrared heat can penetrate organic substances such as the human body without heating the air in between. By using far infrared heat as opposed to traditional heating methods, you enable the heat to penetrate deeper into your body without the skin discomfort of heating pads, hot towels, and some pain relief gels/creams.

Nothing Says Love like Dark Chocolate

Holidays are full of traditions and Valentine’s Day is no different. No matter who you are, you have most likely been on the giving or receiving end of a box of chocolates on this most cherubic of days.

Fortunately, you and your valentine do not have to sacrifice health in the name of holiday celebration. Dark chocolate is actually good for you. It contains a higher level of beneficial, heart healthy, cocoa flavonoids than milk chocolate.

According to an abc news article published today, the dark chocolate trend is picking up steam. Dark chocolate sales broke records this year. When pressed for an explanation, experts point to the buzz in recent years about chocolate being good for the heart.

Some studies link high chocolate consumption with a “37 percent reduction in cardiovascular disease risk, a 31 percent reduction in diabetes risk and a 29 percent reduction in stroke risk when compared to low chocolate consumption.”

Also, it is safe for all the lovers out there who are lactose intolerant.

So this year make sure the goodies inside that heart shaped box are actually good for the heart!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

February’s Charity Checkout: Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center!

Hi all! It’s February 1st and we all know what that means, right?

That’s right! It’s time to move on to February’s Charity Check-out recipient. ActiveForever is so excited to partner up with the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center in an effort to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other movement disorders.

So be sure to make a purchase and give what you can upon check-out. It’s for a wonderful cause that affects as many as one million American men and women today. Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year, and this number does not reflect the thousands of cases that go undetected.

The Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center (MAPC) and Movement Disorders Clinic is a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence, and a wonderful resource for people with Parkinson’s and their families. The Center was established in 1997 by Muhammad Ali, Jimmy Walker, a Phoenix philanthropist, and Dr. Abraham Lieberman.

When it Comes to Weight Loss, Consider the Timing–Not Just the Content–of Your Diet

So you’re doing everything right. You’ve done the impossible and stayed true to your New Year’s resolutions.

You figured out ways to soldier on with regularly scheduled sweat sessions despite a recent weather pattern that screams at you to surrender to the security of your most comfortable blanket.

You stick to your diet and remain ever mindful of what you eat; but somehow the weight loss just isn’t going as planned.

According to a new study published today in the International Journal of Obesity, when it comes to losing weight, the time you eat can have as much of an effect as what you eat. (Original article appears here.)

“We should start to consider meal timing in addition to calories and meal composition when thinking about weight loss.”

-Frank Scheer, senior author of the study, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and an associate neuroscientist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

It’s definitely food for thought, and a welcome bit of news as far as we’re concerned. Who wants to put off that long-awaited lunch break anyway? After all, doing so is bad for your health!

Big wins for Folic Acid

The benefits of folic acid, or “folate” are numerous. So it’s unfortunate that such a large proportion of the population is deficient in this vital nutrient. Low levels of folic acid can lead to anemia, kidney and liver complications, etc., as well as an inability to absorb nutrients in general.

Folate enjoys wide consumption as a way to prevent certain types of cancers, heart issues, stroke, hearing and memory loss, gum infections, osteoporosis, depression and more. It’s been used as a treatment for alcoholism. Expectant mothers take it to prevent miscarriage and birth defects.

In a press release issued today, Barbara Griffin, NMD, CNC, Certified Gluten Practitioner, and owner of Vital Health, Inc. suggests “L-MethylFolate” to be the preferred form of folate ingestion due to long-standing absorption issues associated with other methods.

“L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF) is the predominate form of folate. L-5-MTHF is a reduced, metabolically active form of folate that occurs naturally in foods and is the primary form of folate found in the blood and tissues,” Griffin says in the report. “As a result, it is far more effective for people who have or are prone to a folic acid deficiency.”

Just as every rose has it’s thorn, so have there been reported downsides to adding folate to your vitamin regimen. Some studies have linked it to increasing the risk of developing certain types of cancer.

Contrary evidence released today sheds a ray of hope on the subject. A study, conducted by Stein Emil Vollset, MD, from the University of Bergen in Norway, receives analysis in this Health.com article.

“The study provides reassurance about the safety of folic acid intake, either from supplements or through fortification, when taken for up to five years,” study author Robert Clarke, from the University of Oxford, said in a journal news release.

As with everything of nutritional value, folic acid is found in an assortment of fruits and veggies. For the past 15 years, federal law has required carb manufacturers to add folic acid—a water soluble ‘B’ vitamin—to their products. These days everything from flour, and breads, to pastas, cereals, cookies and crackers is flush with folate.

Still, there simply is no substitute for the real thing. Not only is folate obtained via natural foods more efficiently absorbed, but the risks associated with supplement intake is nullified.

ActiveForever’s December Donation to Charity

cropped-cropped-icon.jpgAt ActiveForever we feel fortunate that we are able to give back to the people of our community—who we love and appreciate.

That’s why we were so excited last weekend when our own Patricka Fletcher presented Katie Wade, of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), with a check.

“The ceremony was very patriotic and jam packed full of AMAZING ladies,” Patricka said. “One elderly woman in particular talked about how she just went sky diving. Her only regret was forgetting to yell “Geronimo!” as she jumped from the airplane.”

L to R: ActiveForever’s Patricka Fletcher presenting Katie Wade of DAR, with a check.

The DAR is a lineage society that is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) charitable organization dedicated to historic preservation, education and patriotism.

Founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., DAR is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

DAR members volunteer more than 250,000 hours annually to veteran patients, award thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and support schools for under-served children with annual donations exceeding one million dollars.

As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, DAR boasts 170,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally.

Proceeds for the donation were collected through ActiveForever’s “Charity Check-out.” Each month, ActiveForever selects a new charity or nonprofit as the  program’s recipient.

The way it works is pretty simple: After making a product selection on the ActiveForever website, customers are informed about that month’s charity and invited to add a donation to their shopping cart total. ActiveForever presents the proceeds to the charity at the end of the month.

ActiveForever, founded in 1993, is the world’s first, and the nation’s top online resource for fitness, safety and medical supplies and innovations. Their prime objective is to improve the lives of their customers through their carefully selected, very affordable product lines.

Their Charity Check-out is part of their growing efforts to make a positive impact in the community.

ActiveForever is currently accepting donations throughout the month of January on behalf of United Blood Services.

Resolution and Weight/Weight Loss Revelations

aflogo-96x96Let’s face it. These days, weight loss tops the list of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions. Of course many also hope to get a new job, better education, etc., However it seems that all but the conviction to shed a problematic fat suit is engulfed in the wake of the post-holiday surrender to reality.

Not that we are lazy or that we give up easily, it’s just that continuing on with the same job or level of education does not increase our risk of diabetes, heart attack, stroke, along with a whole host of serious health issues that are part of and parcel of being—and staying— overweight. (In other words, your physician will not peer at you from behind a furrowed brow of concern in response to your modest salary.)

Many of us view the debut of a new year as a solid, tangible break from the past that translates into a “break” from our old, unhealthy habits. It’s a whole new paradigm; another chance.

As we should. Depending on your disposition, you can either view the American obesity epidemic as discouraging or an opportunity for growth; *not* in the physical sense of course.

Percentages of Overweight Americans Ages 20+

  • More than two-thirds (68.8 percent) of adults are considered to be overweight or obese.
  • More than one-third (35.7 percent) of adults are considered to be obese.
  • More than 1 in 20 (6.3 percent) have extreme obesity.
  • Almost 3 in 4 men (74 percent) are considered to be overweight or obese.
  • The prevalence of obesity is similar for both men and women (about 36 percent).
  • About 8 percent of women are considered to have extreme obesity.

Source: Weight-control Information Network

Yesterday we wrote about some healthy weight findings that we found to be a little unorthodox: A recent study claims that those who carry a few extra pounds around have a lower risk of premature death than that of their healthy weight counterparts. The article does not address obesity however. A person is obese when their BMI (body mass index) is 30 percent or above.

This is a different story. An article in USA Today “weighs” in on the topic with the help of a few reputable physicians. The piece is a fitting follow-up to yesterday’s post. Plus it includes links to diet and exercise tips and information on how to lose weight by forming healthier habits.

Need help sticking to your resolutions? We do too!

Resolution and Weight/Weight Loss Shockers

aflogo-96x96Perhaps prompted by all the hyper-idealistic discussion about resolutions (which always inevitably revolve around diet and weight loss,) the Los Angeles Times recently reported that a few extra pounds is fine for your health.

I don’t know about you, but this news prompts in me a rare reaction of simultaneous shock and comfort. It evokes the former because it flies in the face of virtually everything else I’ve heard regarding weight and health for ohhh… my lifetime; a.k.a., more than the past thirty years.

It’s comforting because I am—like many of you I’m sure (hey, we’re Americans)—a few pounds overweight. I’m working on it though. My meticulously planned resolutions are on track now for three days and counting.

Regardless, the story is worth a gander. Plus the page features a Dr. Oz “Real Age” calculator. It’s smack dab in the middle of the story in the form of a Google Ad, but as far as ads go, you have to admit, it’s a good one. If you’ve never calculated your real age, it’s worth a go. It can be a real eye opening experience; and depending on your lifestyle, that can be either good or bad. You’ve been warned.

If this short series of bombshells are not enough for you, take heed. Solace comes in the form of another article listed off to the left of the page under “RELATED.” There is a link to a bit of news that ran in late December. It reports that running is actually a more effective way to shed pounds than weight training.

(Huh?) What is going on in this bizarro world of ours?

Personally, I’m happy about this one too. I like lifting weights, but through the years I have found a shortage of things in this world that that offer a greater sense of satisfaction and well-being than a good, hard, sweat-inducing, mind-wandering, run.

Not only does it promote a leaner body and a stronger heart, but it just as equally results in clarity of mind and an overall sense of calm.

Ahhh… 2013 is going to be a great year. I can feel it.

Ooohhh…. Jackpot.

Hemorrhoids Among Most Widely Searched Terms in 2012

aflogo-96x96Yes, that’s right. At the top of the list, accompanying Whitney Houston, Hurricane Sandy, Presidential Election, Kate Middleton, etc., as the most frequently searched terms this year, were “hemorrhoids,” according to Google’s annual “zeitgeist” report.

Analysts speculated that this could be due to the personal nature of the condition people prefer to cure hemorrhoids at home, rather than talk to their physician about it.

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels that are found in and around the anus and lower rectum. They can be internal, which means inside the anus. Or, they may be external, which means they are found outside the anus.

Activeforever Now Provides Easy International Shipping

aflogo-96x96ActiveForever is like a caring and protective mother, always on the lookout for your health, safety and well-being. Their fervent dedication to this mission solidifies their place on the cutting edge of all the newest products, developments and solutions for wellness.

For some time now, ActiveForever has had to resist a persistent demand to fully expand their operations to regular international shipping. They feared high incidences of fraud and complications in reconciling with international banks.

As the oldest and most trusted provider of health, fitness and safety products in the United States, ActiveForever offers very high service levels. They feared that would be diminished a bit with their international customers.

All that has changed, and they are thrilled to announce their new partnership with Bongo International. By joining forces with this industry leader in intelligent, eCommerce transactions, ActiveForever is properly equipped to provide their worldwide customers with a seamless, intuitive shopping experience.

“In the past, the international check-out process was convoluted and disparate,” said ActiveForever CEO and Chief Happiness Officer, Erika Feinberg. “The user had to visit a different website, create a separate account and allow a third-party company to place the order on their behalf.”

Now, regardless of whether an ActiveForever order is placed from France or Ohio, the check-out process is completed with little more than the click of a button.

The company has proven their ability to provide quality products worldwide, and are pleased to benefit their global customers with Bongo’s smart, simple, Check-out Solution.

“There is no longer a goofy process,” said Feinberg. “Now location is a non-issue, our customers simply check-out with no middleman and the order is received.”

Feinberg added that so far, the response has been remarkable.

“Our international customers seem thrilled that we’re making our product offering freely available to them with this easy process.”

ActiveForever’s Charity Check-out Success!

aflogo-96x96ActiveForever would like to thank everyone who donated and helped make the inaugural month of our Charity Check-out such a wonderful success.

ActiveForever selected Daughters of the American Revolution, (DAR) as the recipient of their Charity Check-out for the month of November. As part of this effort, shoppers were given the option to add a donation to their purchase total. The proceeds went to benefit DAR’s Project Patriot program.

This project helps fulfill the holiday “wish-lists” of overseas servicemen and women. These lists include everyday items such as Top Ramen, peanut butter, Campbell’s Soup, Slim Jims, “Extra” gum, Pop Tarts, etc., They are purchased directly for the troops with 100 percent of the donations received and shipped in time for the holidays.

On January 4, 2013, ActiveForever will present DAR with a check along with a supply of ActiveForever catalogs. The meeting-luncheon will be held at McCormick Golf Club in Scottsdale.

ActiveForever was so thrilled with the outcome of the Charitable Check-out that they’ve decided to keep it going. The charity for December is Honor House — a transitional home for wounded veterans which helps them heal and reintegrate back into society.

We hope you join us in supporting this worthy cause.

ActiveForever supports “Project Patriot” with our “Charitable Check-out.”

‘Tis the season for charitable giving. And it’s no wonder. It’s a time-tested truism that people tend to hit their philanthropic peaks when they are at their happiest.

Yes, you are busy and yes, you are frazzled with a to-do list twice the size of  Santa’s. But you are talking to your beloveds more frequently, and everyday exchanging cards and gifts with friends.

Your hideous Christmas sweaters are now in style and what is normally a dismal block of pavement is adorned in twinkling garland and bows. Hot cocoa and candy are a dietary staple and once bitter kids are well-behaved. So naturally we can shell-out a dollar or two for the storefront Santa.

We have a lot of people to thank for these happy times, starting with the troops; especially those overseas.

In honor of these brave men and women, ActiveForever has joined with Daughters of the American Revolution to support “Project Patriot.”

This project makes the holidays a little brighter for our overseas servicemen and women by fulfilling their holiday “wish-lists.” These lists include everyday items such as Top Ramen, peanut butter, Campbell’s Soup, Slim Jims, “Extra” gum, Pop Tarts, etc.,

They are purchased directly for the troops with 100 percent of the donations received. D.A.R. packages and ships them in time for the holidays.

ActiveForever is thrilled about this wonderful cause and we thought you might be too, so we created our “Charitable Check-Out.” This makes donating to Project Patriot very easy and fast.

After you have made your selection and pressed the check-out button, you will be given the option to make a donation. The amount you choose will be added to your purchase total. That’s it!

This is just our way of remembering some very important people at this special time of year.

There are so many great ways to give this holiday season and this is just one of them. We know that no matter how you choose to be charitable, you will be making someone’s season very bright.

Happy  Holidays!
