ActiveForever Presents: From Slam Dunks to Golden Sets

ActiveForever-logo        ActiveForever Member Profile: Natalie Martinez

Former college basketball player Natalie Martinez has found a new obsession to replace her old one. As a consequence, the bulk of her time is now spent on a tennis court instead of the gym. This Albuquerque native was a child star and former three-time All-State basketball player at Rio Grande High before ending up with a college scholarship to play for the famed Kentucky Wildcats.

She’s been done with basketball for more than a decade now however and by now she has sunk the same dedication that made her a great baller into becoming a top tennis player. She’s been a quick study; going from 3.5 to 4.5 in just a few short years, and she’s given herself a heavy dose of competition to get her there. She’s a frequently player and fierce competitor in tournaments and leagues (17 League teams since 2005).

We chose Martinez as our March ActiveForever Member profile because it just seemed a natural fit. We recently caught up with her to hear about her transition from basketball to tennis and, of course to get her March Madness bracket picks. (Don’t worry, her bracket busted, just like ours.)

USTASW: It’s March Madness now and you have a great story as a former college basketball player coming into tennis. Was tennis just a whim after basketball was over? Tell us how you got started and how you ultimately found yourself in the game of tennis.

NM: After playing overseas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I was invited to training camp for the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. When I didn’t make the team, I knew my professional basketball days were over. I had always wanted to try my hand at tennis. I grew up watching the Slams on television with my Mom Mary Ida, and my Dad Joe. I really enjoyed watching Agassi, Sampras, Graf, Sabatini, Capriati…I was told to go see Joe Felice at the Albuquerque Country Club in 2005-2006. He outfitted me in my first racquet and gave me my first lesson. I was hooked!

Natalie Martinez

Although Natalie Martinez, pictured here with her racket, always appreciated the tennis greats she grew up watching, she didn’t play the sport until later in life.

USTASW: Growing up playing basketball in Albuquerque, you ended up out in the Blue Grass State, and playing basketball for Kentucky – Big Blue! Talk a little about that. I’m sure playing Div. 1 college basketball and all those fun arenas was an incredible experience?

ActiveForever-member-Profile

Natalie pictured here in her college days wearing her Kentucky Blues!

NM: Every kid who loves playing basketball has dreams and aspirations to play for a big time college basketball program. I was fortunate enough to have been recruited and signed by Kentucky. It was definitely a big decision to leave home and my family, but having the opportunity to play for the Big Blue Nation was something I couldn’t pass up. It is the best conference in the nation for women’s basketball (SEC) and playing on ESPN and in front of thousands of fans was definitely a GREAT experience for me.

Kentuckians bleed blue for basketball. Basketball is a way of life out there and the mens’ and womens’ programs are met with high expectations year-in and year-out to vie for the National Championship. I was very fortunate to be able to watch Rick Pitino’s & Tubby Smith’s Cats practice for four years and learn the game from watching. Tubby Smith’s Cat’s won the Championship in 98’ and boy did we celebrate! It was a great time to be a Wildcat!

ActiveForever Member Profile: Giving Tennis a Voice

CHRIS HOWARD of Prescott, Ariz.

Chris Howard of Prescott, Arizona has been in the game for more than forty years, helping spread the love by teaching, playing and even writing about the sport for much of that time. Howard started his journey back as a pre-teen in Ohio and ended up in Arizona in 1976, taking a couple of teaching gigs in Phoenix for awhile before ultimately ending up in the Northern Arizona city of Prescott in 1985.

Howard’s been in the small Northern Arizona city ever since, and it’s been there where he has made his biggest mark in tennis, helping get the Prescott Racquet Club built, as well as being a strong grassroots activist and executive board member for the Prescott Area Tennis Association, as well as helping grow the game through the USPTA teaching organization.

However, the thing Howard might most be known for is serving as Prescott’s tennis voice. He has been the weekly tennis columnist the last couple of decades for the city’s daily paper – the Prescott Daily Courier, writing hundreds of columns that can range from local tennis goings-on in Prescott to the pro game to tennis etiquette dos and don’ts.

Howard has watched his little town blossom, and remains active on all fronts in the game. He recently spoke with USTA Southwest’s Jeff Sikes for this month’s ActiveForever Member Profile. Howard gave the USTA the scoop on how his journey with the sport began, what’s kept him around the sport so long, his role as a tennis media voice, and what his hometown of Prescott is doing to grow the game.

ActiveForever Member Profile: The Abbotts

Don & Kathy Abbott of Tucson, Ariz.

Don and Kathy Abbott are this month’s spotlight member profile. We chose this tennis loving couple from Tucson because they have been relentless of late, finding their names together in several tournament draws throughout the Southwest and even United States. This couple was one of our 2012 Adult Slam Series Champions in the 65 Mixed Doubles category, and Kathy was also our top performer in the Women’s 65 Singles.

The Abbotts from Tucson, Ariz. Image courtesy of USTA Southwest.

We got to talking to them and found out they had a great back story, and that the couple—
who have been married more than 40 years—actually met through tennis back in their home state of Ohio.

The couple used to take plenty of travel trips to play tournaments, often hitting the road and popping up a tent at tournament stops along the way. After a ten-year break from the sport and a relocation to Tucson a little more than a decade ago, the self-professed “tennis addicts” dove back into the sport and have been warriors with it ever since.

We caught up with the couple from the road this month. They were in Palm Springs playing the Babolat World Tennis Classic Adult Age Group National Level 2 Tournament. We got their thoughts on how they met, how couples can play (and stay) together doing it, and why they are so gung-ho about tennis.

ActiveForever profiled members, the Abbotts. They love their tennis! And we love them!! Image courtesy of USTA Southwest.

USTASW: What got you started in tennis?

Don: We both were trying to find a fun way to get exercise. We discovered that we were both competitive. We liked the idea of trying to develop a set of skills that we could enjoy throughout our lives. Tennis was also comparatively inexpensive and a good aerobic activity.

Kathy: Before I ever met Don, a fellow chaperone of a high school ski trip asked if I played tennis. I had picked up a racquet a few times in college and thought it would be fun to play so I told her  yes. We joined a local public outdoor facility that I thought was outrageously expensive at $20 for the summer, but that was the only place she’d play because a guy that she had gone out with a few times played there. She was the one who played tennis so what could I say?

Turns out we played almost every day. Picking up a racquet and “playing” creates such bad habits. But what did I know? I was having a great time.

Activeforever Now Provides Easy International Shipping

aflogo-96x96ActiveForever is like a caring and protective mother, always on the lookout for your health, safety and well-being. Their fervent dedication to this mission solidifies their place on the cutting edge of all the newest products, developments and solutions for wellness.

For some time now, ActiveForever has had to resist a persistent demand to fully expand their operations to regular international shipping. They feared high incidences of fraud and complications in reconciling with international banks.

As the oldest and most trusted provider of health, fitness and safety products in the United States, ActiveForever offers very high service levels. They feared that would be diminished a bit with their international customers.

All that has changed, and they are thrilled to announce their new partnership with Bongo International. By joining forces with this industry leader in intelligent, eCommerce transactions, ActiveForever is properly equipped to provide their worldwide customers with a seamless, intuitive shopping experience.

“In the past, the international check-out process was convoluted and disparate,” said ActiveForever CEO and Chief Happiness Officer, Erika Feinberg. “The user had to visit a different website, create a separate account and allow a third-party company to place the order on their behalf.”

Now, regardless of whether an ActiveForever order is placed from France or Ohio, the check-out process is completed with little more than the click of a button.

The company has proven their ability to provide quality products worldwide, and are pleased to benefit their global customers with Bongo’s smart, simple, Check-out Solution.

“There is no longer a goofy process,” said Feinberg. “Now location is a non-issue, our customers simply check-out with no middleman and the order is received.”

Feinberg added that so far, the response has been remarkable.

“Our international customers seem thrilled that we’re making our product offering freely available to them with this easy process.”

ActiveForever’s Charity Check-out Success!

aflogo-96x96ActiveForever would like to thank everyone who donated and helped make the inaugural month of our Charity Check-out such a wonderful success.

ActiveForever selected Daughters of the American Revolution, (DAR) as the recipient of their Charity Check-out for the month of November. As part of this effort, shoppers were given the option to add a donation to their purchase total. The proceeds went to benefit DAR’s Project Patriot program.

This project helps fulfill the holiday “wish-lists” of overseas servicemen and women. These lists include everyday items such as Top Ramen, peanut butter, Campbell’s Soup, Slim Jims, “Extra” gum, Pop Tarts, etc., They are purchased directly for the troops with 100 percent of the donations received and shipped in time for the holidays.

On January 4, 2013, ActiveForever will present DAR with a check along with a supply of ActiveForever catalogs. The meeting-luncheon will be held at McCormick Golf Club in Scottsdale.

ActiveForever was so thrilled with the outcome of the Charitable Check-out that they’ve decided to keep it going. The charity for December is Honor House — a transitional home for wounded veterans which helps them heal and reintegrate back into society.

We hope you join us in supporting this worthy cause.

What Is Compression? More than just Compression Stockings

What is coaflogo-96x96mpression? When the subject comes up, people tend to have a lot of questions. “Compression” is when graduated pressure is built into the garment, increasing toward the top. This fosters circulation and emphasizes greater blood-flow, which reduces the rate of dangerous and sometimes life-threatening, blood-pooling and swelling.

While compression stockings specifically, are the most common type of compression garment, with the rapid growth of the industry, the standard knee-high compression stockings is quickly finding itself amongst an ever widening pool of compression products.

When it comes to compression, one names stands out among the rest. Starting with its founder, Conrad Jobst, who suffered from venous disease, JOBST® has remained deeply committed to improving the quality of life for those with Deep-Venous Thrombosis (DVT), Lymphederma, Thromboembolism,  athletic injuries, or any number of other conditions related to swelling.

Since Jobst’s 1950 founding, their line has grown to provide healing compression and comfort in the form of top-quality gloves, and arm sleeves, as well as athletic and standard socks and everything in between. Their complete line of sheer pantyhose are flattering, fashionable and utterly indistinguishable from their non-compression counterparts.

It’s no wonder. Over the years Jobst has been relentless in their pursuit of quality and perfection. They’ve come up with clever devices to make putting on compression articles easy.

At Home with Dealers

HME Business

By J. Daniel Hull, Jay Williams

Jun 01, 2005

Company Name:Active Forever Location/Contact Info: 10799 North 90th Street Scottsdale, AZ 85260 800-377-8033; customerservice(at)activeforever.com www.activeforever.com Established: 1991

Types of products sold: “We research best choices of product solutions for practically every physical challenge you can image for daily living activities,” said CEO Erika Feinberg.

Size of Company (employees, clients per year): 4,000 new customers a month

Home Health Products spoke with Feinberg about Active Forever’s successful Web site and in-store business that operates with zero insurance billing.

Q:What is unusual/unique about the store?

A:All the customer service counselors are on wireless headsets, while they’re talking to someone about an order, they can walk over and play with the product and demonstrate it. The 5,000 square foot store is part of our corporate headquarters and it’s set up like Sharper Image. People can come in to try things.

What we carry is motivated by our local health care facilities; we’re surrounded by three Mayo clinics, Scottsdale Healthcare, St. Josephs Hospital and Bayer Neurological Institute.

Q:Describe your relationship with your manufacturers.

A:We always have a very detailed three-page questionnaire that we run our potential suppliers through before we’ll consider carrying their product. There are many things we require of them regarding returns, maintenance and what type of warranties or guarantees they have on their products. The number one is how quickly they can get us the products. Whether they’re shipping to our warehouse, or to our customer, we require that they ship immediately.

The reason I say that’s so important is because none of us plan for trauma. And when someone needs these things, they need them immediately. We have an arrangement with our shipping company, especially in Arizona, where the product goes out next day without any extra cost.

Q:What is something you have learned from your experience in the HME industry?

A:Most of it is driven by insurance and we completely understand why some HMEs are insurance driven. I encourage traditional DME companies to embrace that and work with us. We’re not competing, because we do absolutely zero insurance billing and we could be a wonderful complement. If their customers are coming in looking for products they don’t carry just pass them off to us and we’ll take care of them. Lots of times, we have people coming in saying, ‘I wonder if insurance will cover this,’ and we just send them to our favorite DMEs.

Q:What has brought you success in the past?

A:The Web site has been around for 14 years. It went through transformation two and a half years ago, and we’re only on the 10 yard line when it comes to vision for the Web business. We still have a long away to go to fulfill our vision of what we’d like people to experience when they’re there. But we’re still getting major awards and recognition for what we’ve done.

Our goal is to have the consumer rely on us the way they rely on a family member–a really smart family member.

Forget we’re in medical and rehab, it’s about thoughtful, wonderful, caring, honest service. Especially since we’re also dealing with trauma, it’s about helping guide the way to more normal living–instead of looking at what’s going to be reimbursed and what’s not going to be reimbursed.

Fun Fact: Anyone who calls into the call center will be greeted with, “How can I make your life easier today?”
